Pet-Safe Decor

Steer clear of tinsel and enticing, dangling decorations, particularly those that captivate cats or position them out of reach. Ingesting tinsel can lead to intestinal blockages, requiring immediate attention.

Promptly stow away gift ribbons and bows or dispose of them in a covered bin to prevent accidental ingestion, reducing the risk of choking or intestinal blockages.

Place glass, aluminum, and paper ornaments on higher branches of the Christmas tree to prevent breakage by curious pets, minimizing the risk of cuts or choking.

Keep snow globes out of reach, as the liquid inside, often containing glycerol or a small amount of ethylene glycol, can be highly toxic to pets.

Lights and Pet-Friendly Flames

Chewing on Christmas lights can result in electric shocks and burns for inquisitive pets. Safeguard cords or opt for battery-operated LED lights as a safer alternative.

Extinguish candles before leaving the room and position them out of reach of pets, even under supervision, to prevent burns or fire hazards.

Pet-Friendly Christmas Tree and Flora

Securely anchor the Christmas tree to prevent it from toppling over and causing harm to pets, especially for cats who may view it as a climbing challenge.

Pets might be tempted to chew on pine needles and branches, causing irritation or injury to their mouths.

Several common Christmas plants, such as hyacinths, amaryllises, lilies, and tulips, are toxic to pets. Also, poinsettias and mistletoe could be toxic to pets.

Choose alternative decorations that are safe in case pets investigate. Opt for pet-safe alternatives like the Christmas cactus.

Holiday Treats for Your Pet

Many traditional holiday foods, including chocolate, xylitol-containing sweets, raisins, almonds, and leftovers with bones or fat, can be harmful to pets. Ensure trash bins are secure and inaccessible to prevent pets from scavenging.

If serving alcoholic beverages, ensure drinks are not left unattended within reach of pets.

Be mindful that even discarded decorations, strings, and holiday treats can pose dangers in the trash. Dispose of garbage before leaving home to prevent pets from investigating in your absence.

Providing Pets with Time and Space

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s crucial to recognize that animals also require peace and their own space to retreat. Particularly timid pets, such as rabbits and cats, or dogs with high anxiety like Spanish Galgos, may seek refuge under furniture, in a carrier, or a separate room.

Be aware of your pet’s sensitivity to loud noises during holiday celebrations, and create a designated area with a cozy bed or blanket where your pets can relax and feel secure, away from festive commotion.
